Health Care Instruction

People in health care instruction jobs work with individuals suffering from injuries, sicknesses, or other medical disorders to instruct them on how to live with their conditions, to maintain treatments, and to be aware of potential danger signs.

The treatments for many medical conditions require that the patients participate in the healing process by making changes to their lifestyles, performing regular therapeutic exercises, taking prescribed medications, or monitoring their symptoms for changes that might indicate problems.  It is the responsibility of heath care instruction professionals to educate patients on the details of their conditions, what the risks are, how to go about caring for themselves, and when to call for assistance.  Health care instruction professionals must have a thorough knowledge of the types of conditions they work with so that they can fully educate their clients, answer any questions they may have, and impart to patients a sense of comfort with and control over their conditions.

These roles require extensive preparation with regard to the medical conditions they provide instruction for, as well as training in how to provide the patient with the necessary knowledge and skills to participate in their own recovery or health maintenance.  Certification programs, such as The Certified Healthcare Instructor (CHI) program from the National Health Career Association, are available to train and certify health care instruction professionals.  Health care instruction professionals may work in clinics and other medical facilities, instructing patients in a classroom environment.  Other health care instruction positions may involve traveling to the homes of patients who are unable to leave due to health concerns.
